Starrise
You are a Star that has accidentally fallen into an unknown land, and in the struggle to save yourself, you've lost your power to rise away. Shards of your power remain, but you don't need all of them. In fact, you can use some of those shards for your own merit on this long road home.
This is a 2D Platformer Game that is made for the Minimalist Game Jam #1 with the theme "Jump". The one rule I've defined for this game is... extra jumps. Picking up the small stars on the way will grant you an additional mid-air jump. However, you can only use that mid-air jump once. These pickups are available as long as you don't use them. Once you do use it, you'll have to either find a new pickup or return to that old one.
The only goal in this game is one. It's not reaching the end of the levels, surprisingly enough. No, it's gathering 5 shards. That's it. Once you've saved up 5 of them, you win. Naturally, you are handed 5 for free at the end of the game... but can you get it sooner?
I really want to thank Lacho for making the music and the SFX for this game. Honestly, the vibe that this has in the end would never have been possible without his effort, so a big shoutout to him.
The fonts used are Suika by Lettertype Studio and Medodica by Posto Carattere. As per their requirements, this game will not be used commercially either.
Instructions on how to play are in the game, but I'll list them here as well. Left movement is A or the left arrow key. Right movement is D or the right arrow key. Jump is space. You can use the up/W or down/S keys to navigate the menus as well. Cutscenes are skippable with the space bar.
There are still some kinks that I haven't been able to work through. For starters, I wanted a pause menu, but I'd rather get it out now instead. The stopping of player input at a moment in the end doesn't work, and leads to some wacky bugs. Most importantly, because I wanted to keep slope jumping as an option while keeping the rage element of sliding on them, I have inadvertently granted a wall jump feature that I can't figure out how to turn off without screwing up the slope mechanics.
Changelog #1: Added a pause menu, accessible with the escape key. Corrected some bugs like changing shapes at a stage when you shouldn't. Set a double check on the end cutscene skip. Added a sign for a one-way collision enabled block that is vital for escaping a pitfall.
